Horton cum Studley Women’s Institute (WI)

Welcome to the Women’s Institute. We are a friendly group who meet in the Millennium Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7.45pm. Our meetings are a great chance to catch up with our friends.  The programme is varied with visiting speakers, outings and meals out. 

 
Our committee is elected annually at our March meeting. The 2018/19 committee is:

We currently have 18 members and attract visitors from the surrounding area each month. We have a wide range of activities including talks, demonstrations, outings, theatre trips, meals out and much more.

Our programme for 2019/20 is currently being compiled and the following dates, activities and speakers have been confirmed so far:
 
14 April 2020 Liz Harris:  Following the Clues – did you know there is no word for ‘love’ or ‘hate’ in some languages?  An entertaining look at what a language tells you about the people who speak that language.
 
22 April 2020 Group Meeting with our neighbouring WI groups, Stanton St John and Otmoor
Julie Summers:  author of ‘Jambusters’ and other books about the WI
 
12 May 2020 Resolutions meeting where we discuss and decide on future WI campaigns
 
June 2020 Garden party with Stanton St John WI.  Date and venue to be confirmed.
 
7 July 2020 Peter Tickler:  find out about plotting and character creation in a crime novel.

8 September 2020 Juliet Blackburn:  History of Antique Fans
 
15 October 2020 Joint meeting with Stanton St John WI – details to be confirmed
 
10 November 2020 Open meeting to which all villagers and visitors, male and female, are invited
Al Sylvester:  motivational speaker, talk entitled ‘Southern Reach’ detailing the RAF’s first unsupported attempt on the Geographic South Pole.  
 
8 December 2020 Christmas Meal, venue to be confirmed
 
 
We look forward to welcoming new members at any meeting but April is a good time to join.  The subscription to become a member of Horton cum Studley WI is £43.00, with all the above offered and much more.  WI meetings are a lovely way to get to know others in the village and to build and refresh friendships.

The October meeting is on Tues 8th with a visit by Caroline Henney to talk on Vintage Jewellery of the 1940, 50,60s. Members can bring along item s from their own jewellery collection.

The November meeting is on Tues 12th with a Christmas Flower demonstration by Kirsty Johnson. It is an Open Meeting, open to anyone, and this always proves to be an interesting evening.

 

The December meeting is on 10th December with a visit out for lunch or afternoon tea somewhere. Watch this space to find out where                            !

A local group of WI’s will be meeting at Stanton St John, Thurs 24th Oct  8pm. The speaker, is strongly recommended - Simeon Courtie, broadcaster, comedy writer & author of The Long and Whining Road, about the year he & his family drove around the world in a VW Camperven, raising money for UNICEF by busking the Beatles from Liverpool to New York. He has had many accolades for his entertaining talks so Don't miss it!!

Visitors pay £3.50 for admission to the talk as well as our usual delicious refreshments.

Now is the best time to join our WI. If a new member joins at the Oct, Nov or Dec meeting, they get a fantastic deal of up to 3 months free & the whole of 2014 too, for the subscription rate of £34.60.

This covers your 11 meetings each year, a copy of the Oxfordshire WI magazine each month of local events, 8 copies of the National magazine W I Life delivered to you, and refreshments at each meeting. Great value!

The 2014 programme has Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, Air Ambulance, Garden meeting, visit to Windsor with more events being planned. 

Coming along to something new may not be easy for you, or you may not have transport. Just give me a call and I will arrange for you to be picked up and brought home. Quite easy really!
